Collaborations
We collaborate with a wide range of organizations and networks to strengthen sustainable fishing in Mexico and in other countries, pooling efforts to achieve greater impact.
Our approach emphasizes close, complementary collaboration with other groups. Rather than replicating existing capabilities, we aim to enhance them by contributing our knowledge and expertise in leveraging market incentives to accelerate positive changes on the water.
Additionally, we have an alliance with the company HealthyFish, which we refer to as the SmartFish Group. HealthyFish operates as a solidarity intermediary, offering cooperatives options to sell their products to responsible seafood markets.

SmartFish Group
HealthyFish sells seafood (and other responsible products) directly to consumers through its SmartFood stores in Mexico City. It also distributes to hotels and restaurants and exports fish to the USA. This integrated collaboration model exemplifies how SmartFish and HealthyFish jointly drive sustainability, equity, and economic growth in Mexico’s seafood industry.

The company Comercializadora HealthyFish, SAPI was established in 2015 by the founders of the nonprofit organization. The purspose was to create a solidarity intermediary buyer, capable of offering fair trade options to cooperatives engaged in responsible seafood practices.
Cooperatives whose products meet strict environmental, social, and quality standards may choose to market their products through this channel. However, it is clearly communicated that receiving advice and training from SmartFish AC in no way obligates them to sell their products through HealthyFish.

We believe the market is a powerful tool for driving change in sustainable fishing. Our work focuses on three key dimensions:
Environmental impact: Promoting responsible fishing practices that conserve marine resources and ensure their sustainability.
Social impact: Generating economic incentives that benefit small-scale producers, giving producers agency in their relationship with the market, creating local jobs, and strengthening coastal communities.
Economic impact: Facilitating transparent commercial negotiations to ensure that improvements in fishing practices are maintained in the medium and long term.

As the marketing arm of the SmartFish Group, HealthyFish connects responsible fishers with conscious consumers. Its main activities include:
Third-party sustainability: Only sells seafood certified by recognized standards such as MSC, Fair Trade, BAP and/or ASC, rated yellow or green by Seafood Watch or participating in a fishery improvement project reporting on Fishery Progress.
A fairer supply chain: Reduces the number of intermediaries to ensure fishers receive a greater share of the final price.
Total transparency: Operates with an “open-book” policy in negotiations with fisher cooperatives, ensuring that all parties know the costs and profits margins of every step in the supply chain.
International Reach: Distributing products to restaurants, hotels, and retailers in Mexico and the United States, while also operating three stores in Mexico City.
Certified B Corporation: As a B Corp, HealthyFish measures and optimizes its social and environmental impact, committing to responsible decision-making for the benefit of the community and the environment.
